Ro-ro ferry weather deck fire suppression system demonstration with water monitor in action – Unifire FlameRanger solution for SOLAS II-2/20 and FSS Code compliance

New SOLAS II-2/20 & FSS Code

New SOLAS and FSS Code regulations take effect on January 1, 2026, which will require ro-ro passenger ships to equip their weather decks with fixed fire detection and fire monitor systems.

All new ships built on or after January 1, 2026, must comply.

All existing ships (build before January 1, 2026, must comply by no later than their first survey on or after January 1, 2028.

The following video presentation provides a comprehensive overview of the new requirements, including:

  • The regulatory background and expected implementation timeline
  • The fire risks unique to weather decks on ro-ro and ro-pax vessels
  • The optimal placement and coordination of fire detectors and remotely controlled fire monitors (robotic nozzles)
  • Findings from the EU-funded LASH FIRE Project, the most in-depth study ever conducted on ro-ro ship fire safety
  • The advantages of autonomous fire monitor systems, which combine detection and suppression to cut response time dramatically

About the LASH FIRE Project

The LASH FIRE Project (www.lashfire.eu) was a three-year, EU-funded research program under the Horizon 2020 framework, involving leading maritime safety experts from across Europe. The project included numerous studies and testing of Unifire’s FlameRanger Autonomous Robotic Fire Suppression System (ARFSS) for the protection of weather decks.

Unifire was a Partner in the LASH FIRE fire detection and fire suppression work packages for the protection of ro-ro passenger ship weather decks.

The LASH FIRE recommendations for the placement and proper implementation of fire detection and fire suppression on ro-ro weather decks provides key additional insights important to consider when planning to comply with the new SOLAS II-2/20 regulations and FSS Code.

Its mission was to reduce the risk of fires on ro-ro ships by developing and validating new design and operational solutions addressing every stage of the fire protection chain.

The project’s results have strongly influenced the new SOLAS II-2/20 and FSS Code amendments.
